The story
In the shadowed alleys of Barcelona's Gothic Quarter, where ancient stones pulse with the echoes of empires, the spirit of Santa Eulàlia—patron saint and eternal root of Catalan culture—stirs from the depths of time. A young martyr of the 4th century, Eulàlia defied Roman oppressors in Barcino, enduring thirteen tortures for her unyielding faith. She is the bedrock of Catalonia’s soul: a resilient flame of identity, creativity, and defiance that has burned through centuries of oppression. From Roman persecutions to medieval inquisitions, civil wars, and Franco’s iron rule, countless forces have sought to crush this spirit, yet it grows ever stronger, like roots breaking through stone. Eulàlia’s light, fractured by tyranny but never extinguished, scatters as radiant lanterns across the Barri Gòtic, their glow beckoning seekers on a quest to trace the city’s story—from its Roman birth to its modern rebirth—and ensure its lessons endure. You are a seeker of the light. Your task is to follow the lanterns and gather pieces of her flame. At each site you visit, the past will speak — stories carved in stone, scars left on walls, symbols etched into fountains, shields, gargoyles, turtles, geese, and scales of justice. These are the Guardians of Barcelona, silent protectors who have watched the city rise, fall, and rise again. They will test you with riddles and puzzles, but if you listen closely and learn, they will share their fragment of Eulàlia’s light.
