The story
Dante Alighieri, born in Florence in 1265, became one of Italy’s greatest poets, best known for The Divine Comedy. During his life, Florence was divided by political strife. Dante supported the White Guelphs, who opposed papal control, but when the rival Black Guelphs took power in 1302 with the Pope’s backing, he was exiled and never returned. He died in Ravenna in 1321.
The Divine Comedy includes Inferno, which maps nine circles of Hell and names real Florentines among the damned. Some say these were Dante’s final curses on his city. To lift them, you must collect tokens from each circle and return them to this statue.
